We
left Ullapool in misty drizzle, and immediately began climbing. The
road to Ledmore was continuous up and down, but was dotted with some
good viewpoints. We headed due North past the castle on Loch Assynt,
and then ascended the long climb beneath Quinag, before descending to
Kylestrome where we had lunch in the pub.
The next section of road to Laxford Bridge had a good number of black
arrows on, but again provided some glorious views of the hundreds of
tiny islands along the west coast, and after Laxford Bridge it was another
long, long climb but at the top we were we were rewarded with magnificent
views, and we could water sparkling in the distance - the North coast.
The mountains seemed to vanish suddenely as we sped towards Durness
along what must have been the path of a glacier a few years back (!).
It was 6pm, and we had thoughts of making straight to Cape Wrath, but
when we got to the ferry terminal (!) discovered that it was on it's
last run, so we wouldn't have been able to get back! So we carried on
to the Youth Hostel at Durness which was a great hostel where the Warden
even baked bread for you.
