On
the morning of the 15th August it was glorious. Not a cloud was in the sky, and
as is not unusual I wandered off taking many photographs. The
large pictures above show the peaceful harbour, the Youth Hostel and the adjacent
Harbour Lights building. |

AUGUST 16th - pm Some 36 hours later - note that in this picture of the flood torrent the Harbour Lights has already disappeared.
On
the way to Lands End the following day, from Perranporth we ran into some really
heavy rain. Only when we arrived at Lands End at 5pm and tuned in to a radio did we realise that this was happening at Boscastle! The village was totally devasted with the tidal wave of water and debris taking away many buildings and washing cars and vans out to sea. The hostel building stood firm, but the ground floor and interior, out buildings etc. were ruined, trees smashed through windows and lodged in some of the rooms, it's amazing that the building didn't collapse under the weight of water. Eve more amazing - nobody was killed or seriously hurt as a result of this flooding.

Reconstruction work nearing completion in 2006
Rear of the hostel in 2007. Note the building has been extended, by filling in the original bays. Chimneys are gone and now the staircases are at the rear of the building. Internally the larger dormitories have been partitioned down to smaller rooms. |
