West Scotland -stunning scenery!

We slept well at Achnashellach, and in the morning we made breakfast in the adequate kitchen and met Gerry the "warden" properly. He was a very pleasant chap, and was running the hostel all yaer round, and the only real rules were to keep the place clean and tidy, and not to use his own personal chair in th common room, apart from that you came and went as you pleased, and could stay as long as you wanted. Sadly he was finding it hard to keep the place going, as he existed mainly on word of mouth, and couldn't fill the hostel which was a shame as he was providing just the sort of accomodation a lot of people would want which is getting difficult to find , siple, comfortable and friendly. (1987) If you're ever touring Scotlands west coast you should visit there.
Soon we were on the road again, we'd had a fairly murky ride so far, but the scenery in this part of Scotland was everything we expected and more - stunning scenery- more than these photographs can describe!

We started off in the rain, heading up Glen Carron to Achnasheen, and onto one of the most scenic bits of the ride - Loch Maree. A scenic descent to the Loch, with lot's of photos stops, and eventually we arrived at Gairloch - another beautiful spot - for lunch.
Continuing North we were heading through a mixture of Sea Lochs, and Inland Lochs, then the coast turned us West past the deserted Gruinyard Island ( Anthrax Island).
A small problem now existed in that we wanted to get to Ullapool which was only some 10 miles direct, but over 30 miles by road. We'd hoped to take a tack to the freery over Loch Broom, but on telephoning from Dundonnel we discovered that we wouldn't get to the last ferry in time, so we had to go around via 1000ft climb, and with the reduced climbing speed the midges feasted on us!
We were knackered at the top of the climb, but the reward was a 12 mile downhill run into Ullapool where we arrived just as the sun was setting.
